KOTA KINABALU: A civil servant was charged in the Special Corruption Court here with abusing her power to obtain a bribe over a food supply tender worth RM49,980.
Monica Gualin, 52, pleaded not guilty before Sessions Court judge Jason Juga today.
On the first and second counts, the charges stated that Monica, as an Assistant District Officer (Administration) Grade N29 had allegedly used her position to obtain a bribe for herself of RM15,000 and RM34,980 from her relative in March 2020 in Kuala Penyu.
Monica had allegedly proposed her relative's company to supply food and beverage to frontline officers during the implementation of the Covid-19 Movement Control Order (MCO) in Kuala Penyu district.
The charges under Section 23(1) of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Act 2009, punishable under Section 24 of the same Act provide for a jail term of up to 20 years and a fine of not less than five times the amount involved or RM10,000, whichever is higher, on conviction.
The court set Sept 9 this year for mention.
Monica who was represented by counsel Datuk Norbert Chin was released on bail of RM10,000 with RM5,000 to be deposited in a local surety.
