KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) arrested a senior assistant of a local authority agency in Terengganu for abuse of power and embezzling nearly RM200,000 worth of funds.
Sources said that the man, in his 50's, is said to have used his position as a treasurer of the union of the agency to approve withdrawals of the welfare funds for personal use.
He was said to have misappropriated the funds between 2017 and 2020, involving over 30 transactions. The man was arrested at 12.30pm earlier today at Terengganu MACC headquarters when he appeared to testify for the case.
He is expected to be brought to Kuala Terengganu magistrates court tomorrow to be remanded.
Terengganu MACC chief Hazrul Shazreen Abd Yazid confirmed the arrest, when contacted.
"The case is being investigated under Section 23(1) of MACC Act 2009," he said.
