KUALA TERENGGANU: A civil servant with the Terengganu state government and his wife were arrested by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) for allegedly abusing his position involving a project worth hundreds of thousands of ringgit from a department in Terengganu.
The man, who is the first suspect in the case, in his late 30s, was arrested at about 6pm today when he was summoned to the Terengganu MACC headquarters to have his statement recorded.
About three hours prior to his arrest, the graft busters arrested his wife, in his 40s, after she provided her statement at the Terengganu MACC headquarters.
Sources said the suspects were arrested for allegedly recommending the company owned by his parents, which was operated by his wife, to obtain a project from a state department in Terengganu.
"The alleged abuse of power by the suspect was believed to have taken place in 2019 and that it involved a project worth hundreds of thousands of ringgit," sources said.
It is learnt that the MACC also seized several luxury vehicles belonging to the couple, worth more than RM100,000, when the commission arrested the suspects.
It is also learnt that the MACC is expected to produce the suspects at the magistrate's court in Kuala Terengganu tomorrow to obtain a remand order against the couple.
Terengganu MACC director Hazrul Shazreen Abd Yazid, when contacted, confirmed the arrest. He added that the case is being investigated under Section 23(1) of the MACC Act 2019.
"A comprehensive investigation is underway as there is a possibility that the suspects are involved in obtaining other projects," he said.
